A Google search on the word “yoga” turned up 76,500,000 results – evidence of the practice’s amazing popularity. But what exactly is yoga?

Having arisen in India between 7,000 and 5,000 years ago, yoga is now practiced all over the world. Contrary to popular belief, it is not linked to any religion, but rather encourages people to explore their spirituality while improving their physical health.

Physical poses or asanas, breathing techniques and meditation are used to improve physical and emotional health. While beginners may be confused by the many different forms of yoga, they should not be put off. “All yoga is beneficial,” says American Suzanne Vian, director of Saigon Yoga Studio. Sunzanne, who discovered yoga in 1994, started offering yoga classes in HCM City in 2003. Thanks to growing demand, her studio is in the process of being enlarged. “The most important thing is to find a style and a teacher you feel good about,” says Suzanne. “Find the style that feels right for your body.”

Regular yoga practice has been shown to improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs, and facilitate the workings of the glandular system. Students also learn to focus and control their breathing, allowing them to reduce stress and to prepare their minds for meditation. “Yoga improves physical health but offers much more,” says Suzanne. “It’s about elevating your consciousness and feeling comfortable in your body. It brings a sense of freedom within your body.”
