What is Yoga? August - September 2006 A Google search on the word “yoga” turned up 76,500,000 results – evidence of the practice’s amazing popularity. But what exactly is yoga? Having arisen in India between 7,000 and 5,000 years ago, yoga is now practiced all over the world. Contrary to popular belief, it is not linked to any religion, but rather encourages people to explore their spirituality while improving their physical health. Regular yoga practice has been shown to improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs, and facilitate the workings of the glandular system. Students also learn to focus and control their breathing, allowing them to reduce stress and to prepare their minds for meditation. “Yoga improves physical health but offers much more,” says Suzanne. “It’s about elevating your consciousness and feeling comfortable in your body. It brings a sense of freedom within your body.” |
